Crestwood Cottage is a traditional brick-built rural property that had remained largely unchanged for decades. The clients — a young family — acquired the cottage knowing it would require extensive work, and appointed us to transform it into a comfortable, contemporary family home without losing its inherent character.
The design approach was one of careful addition rather than erasure. The existing cottage fabric is retained and restored where possible, with a new extension to the rear providing the additional space required for modern family life. The extension is clearly contemporary in character, using materials that respond to the original brick without mimicking it.
Planning was obtained at first application following careful pre-application discussions with the local authority’s conservation officer. The project demonstrates our experience in handling sensitive rural sites with listed or non-listed heritage assets.
